Empowering Independence in the Digital age ——A Roxy-LINK: Seniors Go Digital

Platform and Volunteers

This event was organized under Roxy Foundation’s Roxy-LINK, which functions as an open platform connecting volunteers with communities in need. For this program, we recruited high school student volunteers entirely online. The team included five students from across Shanghai: two from schools in Pudong, one from Huangpu, one from Jing’an, and one from Hongkou. Their diverse backgrounds reflect the Foundation’s ability to mobilize young people from different districts and unite them under one mission: bridging the digital divide.

Partner Organization

The program was held in collaboration with the Jinqiao Senior Service Center, which hosted the event and brought together 50 seniors eager to learn new digital skills.

Program Flow

The 90-minute session was divided into two parts:

  • First 30 minutes: Structured Instruction Volunteers introduced seniors to practical digital skills that go beyond the basics of messaging or making phone calls. The training focused on real-life applications, including how to book and pay for hospital appointments online, recharge public transportation cards, hail a ride with mobile apps, unlock shared bikes, purchase groceries through platforms like Dingdong Maicai, and shop online with confidence—including how to request returns when necessary.
  • Next 60 minutes: Interactive Practice and Challenges Seniors practiced these skills with hands-on guidance from volunteers. To make learning engaging, we introduced small challenges—for example, “Search for a recipe on Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) and explain how to cook it.” Those who completed the task quickly and accurately received small prizes. This interactive format made the session lively and ensured seniors could immediately apply what they learned.

Outcomes and Impact

By the end of the event, many seniors had not only acquired specific digital skills but also gained a renewed sense of independence. Several participants successfully booked hospital appointments online for the first time, others learned how to recharge their transportation cards or use ride-hailing services without outside help, and some were able to find and share recipes through LittleRedBook.

The core achievement was not just skill transfer, but empowerment. Instead of relying on their children to perform these tasks, seniors now feel capable of navigating the digital world themselves. This independence is crucial for maintaining dignity and autonomy in daily life, while also opening new doors to convenience and connection in the digital era.

Through this initiative, Roxy-LINK demonstrated how digital education can empower seniors to live more self-sufficiently, ensuring they are not left behind as society continues to move online.
